September 28, 2020 by Valarie Budayr

{Guest post from the Izzy Newton and the S.M.A.R.T. Squad Team and National Geographic Kids}

Welcome to the Izzy Newton and the S.M.A.R.T. Squad Blog Tour!

To celebrate the release of Izzy Newton and the S.M.A.R.T. Squad: Absolute Hero by Valerie Tripp (author of the American Girl book series) on September 8th, blogs across the web are featuring exclusive, original content from Valerie, plus 5 chances to win a SIGNED copy of Izzy Newton!

When author Valerie Tripp was creating the characters of The S.M.A.R.T. Squad, she found it helpful to brainstorm a profile of each girl’s likes, dislikes, and other traits. Read on to learn more about each member of the Squad (in their own handwriting)!

Meet the S.M.A.R.T. Squad

By Valerie Tripp

The S.M.A.R.T. Squad Girls know that it’s sensible to keep their senses sharp!

Izzy Sight/Colors: anything from primary colors to synthetic hues as long as they are rich, vibrant, and varied Hearing/Music: Jean-Pierre Rampal’s Japanese flute music, Native American flute songs, wild Irish dances, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak and Prokofiev, Katy Perry Smell/Scent: Ivory soap Touch/Textures: smooth stone and cool glass Taste/Flavors: apples Pets: Wickins, her cat Likes: Physics, ice hockey, prisms, rainbows, clocks, windmills, books, climbing trees, tides, comets, the moon and planets, telescopes, playing the flute, her friends Dislikes: Excess of any kind, fuss, fuzziness, illogic, ‘emo,’ and drama, and most of all, speaking in front of a group of people Clothes: Izzy would like the bright, vibrant colors and streamlined, no-nonsense simplicity of Athleta.

Charlie Sight/Colors: sky blue, leaf green, and stone gray Hearing/Music: bird song; Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copeland; Ed Sheeran Smell/Scent: honey, pine, hay Touch/Textures: hemp, adobe, bark Taste/Flavors: peach, citrus, mint Pets: You name it! Charlie lives on a small farm and her parents are veterinarians so she is surrounded by animals of all sorts: puppies, kittens, birds, horses, sheep, goats, and chickens. Many of the animals are rescue animals recovering from injuries. Likes: Biology, nature, everything that grows; running; her friends Dislikes: Waste, or anything that hurts the environment; red meat; plastic Clothes: Though Emma Watson’s clothes are too dressy, Charlie would approve of Watson’s philosophy: https://www.whowhatwear.com/emma-watson-ethical-fashion. Charlie goes to used-clothing stores to find no-nonsense clothes well suited to the out of doors. The styles she favors are LLBeanish and Lands’ Endish.

When middle school mishaps happen, five friends from the S.M.A.R.T. Squad and use their collective skills and the power of science to bring order to their school.
Science reigns supreme with this squad of young brainiacs. Join Izzy Newton and her friends in the first adventure of this fun new middle-grade fiction series from National Geographic Kids.
A crowded new school and a crazy class schedule are enough to make Izzy feel dizzy. It may be the first day of middle school, but as long as her best friends Allie Einstein and Charlie Darwin are by her side, Izzy knows it’ll all be okay. However, first-day jitters take an icy turn when Izzy’s old pal Marie Curie comes back to town. Instead of a warm welcome, Marie gives her former pal the cold shoulder. The problems pile up when the school’s air-conditioning goes on the fritz and the temperature suddenly drops to near freezing. The adults don’t seem to have a clue how to thaw out the school. Cold temperatures and a frigid friendship? Izzy has had enough of feeling like an absolute zero. She rallies the girls to use their brainpower and science smarts to tackle the school’s chilly mystery … and hopefully to fix a certain frozen friendship along the way. Will the girls succeed and become the heroes of Atom Middle School?
