Lump Lump and the Blanket of Dreams
Inspired by Navajo Culture and Folklore

*Two ALA reviews
*In the library and the bookstore at the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian*
Winter is coming, but the little black bear, Lump Lump, isn’t ready to go to sleep!  With the help of his mother, the wise Bluebird and his forest friends, Lump Lump gathers materials for Spider Woman to weave him a Blanket of Dreams.   Inspired by Navajo/Diné culture and folklore, and featuring the blanket of famed Navajo weaver Barbara Teller Ornelas, this beautiful tale of family and friends takes the reader on a journey through the spectacular traditions and landscapes of the Southwest.
Gwen Jackson graduated magna cum laude from Lincoln University with a B.A. in psychology.  She won a Ford Foundation and attended the University of Michigan, where she received an M..A. in psychology.
Because of Gwen’s background as an educator, she wanted to ensure that her book was accurate.  She frequently consulted with Navajo weaver Barbara Teller Ornelas, who allowed Gwen to use her “Child’s Blanket” in the book. Ms. Ornelas wants more people to know about Navajo weaving.  Ms. Ornelas’ blankets are in the British Museum and many other galleries.
Gwen also received advice (pro bono) from Dr. Paul Apodaca  of Chapman University, a past-regional advisor to the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian.  Dr. Apodaca, a Navajo, made many suggestions, including the title of the book.
Navajo weaver Lynda Teller Pete, whose work is in many museums and galleries, did a lesson based on the book on SMART Exchange.  Western Wildlife Outreach (Washington) generously consulted on the pictures.  This book is also in the Nanticoke Indian Museum, which is especially meaningful to Gwen because of family ties.
The author’s website has many educational activities.

Author Lois Petren/The 5 Enchanted Mermaids

The Five Enchanted Mermaids celebrate diversity in our world and the belief that each child deserves to have a mermaid that looks like them. Through their individual personalities and traits, they weave stories that help teach skills for children in this age group.

The idea for the Five Enchanted Mermaids was born to provide a fun but educational backdrop for girls aged 3 to 7 years. The characters address emotional skills (making friends, resolving conflicts, coping with change, making their own choices, and “being good people”) and educational skills (learning to read, the alphabet, counting, symmetrical shapes, time, the value of monetary coins/notes) that are important at that age in the development of young girls. The stories use each of the diverse mermaids as a role model for behavior and values.

LifeMadeSimple and acclaimed children’s book author, Lois Petren, are collaborating to provide a series of books, party accessories, and other appropriate items to support these goals. Lois, along with business partner, Jackie Bunn, has been working on developing the Five Enchanted Mermaid merchandise line and spreading the word about the mermaids.

The Five Enchanted Mermaids book series includes Sally’s First Day of School, Happy Birthday Miss Molly, You Can Do It!, a coloring and activity book, as well as individual books for several of the mermaids. These books feature each mermaid and their superpower:  Zari/independence, Sofia/honesty, Emily/courage and Jenny/confidence. Anna/kindness will be published in early 2022.
All books are for ages 3 to 7 and perfect for readers who like unique stories that help develop emotional intelligence and a growth mindset.

Author Afsaneh Moradian

Afsaneh Moradian has loved writing stories, poetry, and plays since childhood. After receiving her master’s in education, she took her love of writing into the classroom where she began teaching children how to channel their creativity. Her passion for teaching has lasted for over fifteen years. Afsaneh now guides students and teachers (and her young daughter) in the art of writing.

Afsaneh also grew up in a multicultural family and at school, where she felt she was an “other”. This made her aware of how important it is for kids to feel loved and supported both in and out of the home. Afsaneh has carried this belief into her career as an English teacher and author.

Her book, Jamie is Jamie was originally written for her daughter who’d been told that only boys can play a superhero. “My daughter and every other child deserve a book that gives them permission to be free to play and explore their own way-not the way everyone, ‘thinks they should,'” Afsaneh shared. “I created my book to challenge gender stereotypes and encourages children to make play choices based on their interests. And because playing is fundamental to learning, I’ve created a special section in Jamie is Jamie for teachers, parents, and caregivers where they can find tips on how to make kids’ playtime learning time.”

Afsaneh’s second book, Jamie and Bubbie: A Book About Pronouns, was released in October of 2021. Her latest book, Homeschooling Outside the Box: A Child-Centered Approach to Teaching Your Unique Child is an approach to teaching your child rooted in your child’s interests, personality, and building a stronger connection between you and your child. If you are ready to ditch the idea of recreating a traditional school at home, this secular approach will help you create a learning environment, routine, and curriculum that enables your child to excel!

SISSY GOES TINY by Rebecca Flansburg and B.A. Norrgard

Eight-year-old Sissy loves her life. She loves her toys, her Big house, and her Big backyard. But when Sissy’s parents decide they are going to live in a Tiny House on wheels and travel around the U.S., Sissy isn’t sure that she will like the idea of “living tiny.” But as she and her mommy and daddy learn about downsizing, repurposing, and how “stuff is just stuff” in a positive way, Sissy soon understands that living Tiny has BIG possibilities; possibilities for all sorts of adventures and learning.

Written by Rebecca Flansburg and BA Norrgard, both Minnesotans (who have been friends for over 30 years),  Sissy Goes Tiny was created to share the idea and process of “going Tiny” from a child’s perspective.

In Sissy Goes Tiny, eight-year-old Sissy and her parents make the bold choice to downsize their life and embark on a journey of living tiny and doing more with less. At first, Sissy struggles to get used to the idea of living in a tiny house on wheels and traveling around the U.S, but as she and her mommy and daddy learn about downsizing, repurposing, and how “stuff is just stuff,” she soon understands that a life of “living tiny” will be filled with the big adventures and learning.

Author Kimberly Lee

Kim C. Lee is a children’s book author from Maryland. She writes about things in life that tickle the heart and is motivated to create stories that feature young Black and African American children.

As a mother to a grade-school-aged son, Kim recognizes the importance of children seeing their likeness and myriad of experiences reflected in books. When she is not focused on finding the right words for a story, Kim enjoys spending time with family and friends, creating content of different types, and travel. Kim is also a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI).
In 2020, Kim published her first children’s book, The Night Owl. In early 2021, she followed up with Meet Frankie Jordan, extending her children’s book collection and continued focus on sharing diverse perspectives.

Meet Frankie Jordan introduces readers to an amazing little girl who holds tight to her love of art despite finding that she is so different from other kids.

Where does one find the courage to embrace their uniqueness and hold fast to their dreams? Frankie Jordan is a little girl who knows that her love of art makes her different from other kids. While they enjoy playing tag and riding bikes, Frankie prefers to spend her time imagining new things and sketching. In reading this story, kids will learn that it is okay to be different and most important to embrace the uniqueness of each individual. It is a story about recognizing the uniqueness in each individual and accepting each person for who they are. (For ages 3-9)

Kim’s third book, Grand Joy, is a collaboration with K. Denise Hendershot and will be released in November 2021.

Author Elizabeth Cureton

The place: Central Park, Earth. The time: Now. What does a migrating bird have to tell us humans about how to treat each other?

Little Bird’s Big Message is a picture book for ages 0-5, with themes of antiracism, diversity, and kindness, and social justice. The story is narrated by one of the birds in Central Park, telling the people, as children, how to interact with our fellow humans by listening rather than making assumptions, with humility rather than entitlement, by acknowledging our many differences as well by finding common ground. With charming images of children of different races, cultures, abilities, and gender identities modeling positive interactions, Little Bird implores the reader to take care of the earth and love its inhabitants. Easily understandable symbols of peace, diversity, equity, environmental stewardship, and freedom from oppression are seen throughout the book.

Using simple rhyming text and thoughtful colorful illustrations this book conveys important social and even spiritual messages in an accessible and adorable way for very young children. An essential and timely modern classic.

Dr. Cureton lives and works in Oakland, California where she is married to a professional bassoonist. As mommy to 4-year-old twins and as a cancer surgeon, she is always humbled. She also aspires to play the oboe more.

Author Shereen Rahming

Shereen Rahming was born and raised in the tiny village of Esperanza in the Central American country of Belize. When she wasn’t in school or running around outdoors with other children in their village,  she had her nose stuck in a book. She loved reading but the one-room schoolhouse didn’t have a great selection of children’s books and they didn’t have a library. So she depended on her mom to send storybooks to her from the United States where her mom lived and worked. She was also lucky that a wonderful mobile library would visit the village once a month.

The only problem was that she never saw storybook characters that looked like her. There was no one she could relate to. Now she lives in Southern California with her husband, children, and their enormous but adorable dog. And since having a daughter of her own, she wrote a book to teach her daughter to believe in herself and to see a character in a book that looks like her. She is now working on a book for her son.

In Ahni & Her Dancing Secret, Ahni dreams of being a prima ballerina so she joins Madam Sabina’s dance school. But her spirit is soon broken when she discovers that the other students are far more advanced than she is and not as friendly as she expected. This charming story depicts the journey of little Ahni from an unsure hopeful to a confident dancer, by discovering the secret to success with the help of wise Madam Sabina. For ages 3-8.

Authors Linda Thornburg and Katherine Archer

In their debut book, Snorkel McCorkle and the Lost Flipper,  Snorkel McCorkle is a 10-year-old eco-warrior determined to fix the unfixable in her life–the school bullies, the endangered environment…even her mother’s disappearance at sea. Her adventures are perfectly described by Katherine Archer’s magical music.
Snorkel has a mass of unruly curls that are always tangled in her snorkel and mask. She’s been wearing them and 24/7 since she learned that her mom, a marine biologist, was lost at sea while measuring water quality off the Florida Keys three months ago.
Snorkel is the only person who believes her mom is still alive drifting in the ocean.
Every night Snorkel charts how far her mom has traveled that day on a map of ocean currents—up the Atlantic coast, to Newfoundland, across the Atlantic, possibly past England and Scotland to Norway, even south to the Canary Islands.
When the school bullies tip her kayak, Snorkel engineers an outrigger for balance from old tent poles, duct tape, and gallon milk jugs.
Snorkel’s best friends are Matilda the Manatee, who’s missing a flipper and have a tracking device, and Figaro, the opera-singing-pelican, whose foot was mangled by ghost line.
When Snorkel’s kayak is pulled out to sea by a storm, her friends Matilda and Figaro rush to her aid. In the turmoil of the trio’s time in open water, Snorkel learns firsthand the dangers facing the creatures of the sea–ghost nets, islands of plastic debris, seismic testing.
Snorkel is a real-world girl facing real-world problems head-on. She empowers young readers to do the same.

Author Maxine Shur

an award-winning 2020 advanced picture book, Brave with Beauty,  about the remarkable 15th century Queen Goharshad who ruled over the vast Timurid empire from her throne in Afghanistan. Some historians believe she was one of the most powerful rulers in world history. Queen Goharshad was a poet, architect and a great patron of the arts. I believe my book about this remarkable woman of Afghanistan would be of importance to Multicultural Children’s Day as it’s a remarkable tale of a strong, talented woman and dispels myths about Islam at that time and particularly about Afghanistan.
Brave with Beauty was named the 2020 Best Picture Book of the Year by the Northern California Children’s Book Reviewer Association and was also named a 2020 Notable Trade Book in the field of Social Studies. Brave with Beauty by Maxine Rose Schur
