Planning for MCBD2018 is already underway and we can’t help being in awe as to how far this non-profit initiative has come. Looking back, we couldn’t be more proud of the support, reach, accomplishments and impact we have made over the last five years. Here’s a quick recap:
Mission: Raise awareness for children’s books that celebrate diversity by getting more of these books into classrooms and libraries. Multicultural Children’s Book Day is celebrated on January 27th.
Reach: 2018 will be our 5th year. In 2017, Multicultural Children’s Book Day had 3.6 BILLION social media share impressions in three days (day before, day of, and day after). We trended #2 on Twitter during our Twitter Party (Jan 27 from 9-10pm) above #MuslimBan with 1900+ tweets during that hour. Our Twitter Party focused on the state of diversity in children’s book publishing and what readers were seeking and having trouble finding.
From September through February, Multicultural Children’s Book Day is especially active on social media. In February we support another initiative, International Book Giving Day. We could continue our active social media presence in March by supporting Read Across America.
Staff: Multicultural Children’s Book Day is founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen who volunteer their time to run this event. We also have two part time paid staff. Valarie Budayr (JumpIntoABook.com) and Mia Wenjen (PragmaticMom.com) are both bloggers, influencers and children’s book authors. Valarie also runs a publishing company, Audrey Press.
Valarie is the daughter of Swedish immigrants and the first to attend college in her family. She speaks five languages including Arabic which is the language they speak at home.
Mia is half Japanese and half Chinese American and married to a Korean American.
Spotlighting Diversity Books: We pair 350+ book reviewers (parents, caregivers, teachers, librarians) with a free diversity book. They post their book reviews on social media (blogs, Facebook and Instagram). This is shared on January 27th. Some teachers & librarians also do book events in the classroom or library in honor of Multicultural Children’s Book Day.
